52 Beers Group, Week 43: Oregon Trail's Bourbon Barrel Porter

Oregon Trail Bourbon Barrel Porter. This one comes from Oregon Trail Brewery in Corvallis Oregon. Not much to say, yet–it’s still in my fridge. I keep planning to crack it open, but then something happens and the circumstances are quite right for a slow sipper. Weekends usually work well and look at that, it’s Friday!

If that is the most recent version I would let it sit for a few months more months….i had this years last week (which is 4% abv less than last years) i tasted some rubbing alc and blackberry flavor

I'm hoping it will mellow out a bit. my bottle could have been bad though also…but i'm going to wait another 4 months before cracking my other one. last year's batch was in my all time top 5 favorite bourbon barrel aged beers.

mychal: Thanks for the heads up. I'll throw it in the cellar for my annual New Year's Day tasting and see what happens.

I bought quite a few bottles of the current vintage to store – we had the #1 & #2 batches and found this to be a great early adopter of the b/bbl blends – but I think this batch isn't going to stand up well to cellaring.

I'm getting a fair bit of oxidation on the finish. I do like this beer, green apple estery on the front end, pleasant oaky nose, but I don't think it will cellar for near as long as #2 (which I still have bottles laying down). 7.5% is probably too low to be laying down for years.

I noticed the ABV drop as well (though through research alone–I haven't tasted any earlier batches). I wonder why this drastic change in recipe–It's quite a bit more than a tweak.
