Send Matt to Beer Camp!

July 6th, 2010

I’ll be honest and upfront right at the beginning of this post: I have been to camp before.   My parents used to send me away for the summers to a camp up in the Northeast Appalachians where I learned to shoot bow and arrows, ride horses, and break curfew.  Now I’ve got the chance to do it all again, except this time with beer (although probably without the bow and arrows).  Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. is holding their Beer Camp again, where winners can get an all access pass to check out their operations.

From the website: “Here at the brewery, you see, feel, taste, and experience everything that Sierra Nevada has to offer.  You’ll get an in depth tour of our facilities, including our brewhouse, barley fields, cellar, and hop rooms.  Jump on our one-of-a-kind Bar Bike and cruise the brewery with stops at the bottling line and hop yard.  Meet with the ‘mad beer scientists’ in our Quality Assurance and packaging laboratories to learn the science behind beer storage and chemistry.  Stop in our taproom at lunch, and return that evening for the ritual ‘tapping of the cask!’”.

I’ve entered this year’s contest in hopes of going down to Chico and documenting my experience about their facility, people, and process.   The original submission is above, but please go and visit my entry in the contest area and click on the “Like” button to show your support!

Photos: Astoria Beer Adventure

April 23rd, 2009

I headed out to Astoria last weekend to do some investigative reporting on the beer scene out there. I had a great time, fantastic beer, and met some cool people. I’m working on the article now, but I’m a bit behind due to entertaining some guests this week. So, I’ll go ahead and leak some photos to buy me a little more time! The whole story will be finished next week.

Photos: Concordia Ale House Beer Brawl II

February 28th, 2009

The Beer Brawl II is continuing at the Concordia Ale House. California, Oregon, and Washington duke it out to win your taste buds. As my schedule would have it, I couldn’t make it out until Friday at 1:00pm. Well, another twelve beer lunch under my belt… $12, 12 samples, and you get to judge! Three different beers in each of four categories: Pale Ales, IPAs, Stouts, and a open category. As of my visit on Friday, the score was:

  • OR: 427
  • WA: 300
  • CA: 296

The Beer Brawl II runs through Sunday, so there’s plenty of time for you to get out, sample some great beer, and vote!

Photos: Behind the Scenes at Cascade Brewing

September 20th, 2008

Cascade Brewing has always been on the list of breweries to shoot, but for some reason they ended up near the end. Well, we finally climbed over the West Hills over to check out their operations. They are definitely doing a lot of unique things at the brewery, but that’s better left for an article. So enjoy the peek into the workings of Cascade Brewing and check back soon for the full story!

Here’s another set from last weekend’s trip to Bend. Along with the 2008 Bend Brewfest and the main brewing facility of Deschutes Brewing, I also stopped by the Deschutes Brewery and Public House to meet some people and check out their Bond Street operations.

Photos: BC Hop Farms Tour!

August 14th, 2008

I got an email from Brian Butenschoen, director of the Oregon Brewer’s Guild, saying “What are you doing at 10am on Tuesday? Want to go for a tour of BC Hop Farms?” Those are my favorite emails…

So we picked up John Harris, brewmaster at Full Sail in Portland, and made our way down to Woodburn, Oregon. After only a few wrong turns, we made it and were surrounded by more than 350 acres of hops! We met up with farm owner Charlie Davidson and toured the fields and harvesting rooms. We ended the tour enjoying the bucket of beer that John Harris brought along: Full Sail Session Lager, IPA, and Prodigal Sun IPA. Hop harvest time is in a couple of weeks, so get ready for those Fresh Hop Ales!

We can’t show off the inner workings of Portland breweries without stopping by Widmer Brothers Brewing! Thanks to brewer Ben Dobler for showing me around the facility.
