Cascade Brewing Barrel House Preview

Tonight's Tap It Tuesday at the Cascade Brewing Barrel House is a preview of their fantastic Kriek: an oak barrel aged sour red ale fermented on cherries. Straight out of the barrel and into the glass, these live tappings are a great piece of the Portland beer scene. While the spectacle of someone from the crowd tapping the barrel can be a fun (and wet) event, surely it's the beer that makes this a great event. Sometimes the barrels hold finished beers, sometimes the barrels hold a single component of a final blend. Not only is it a great chance to try some very limited beers, but you get to try these offerings in different stages over their lifetime and you can deconstruct these wonderfully complex blends. Read the details in the official press release:

Tonight's Tap It Tuesday live from the barrel series at 6pm is a preview of our 2011 Kriek. This live NW style sour ale is a blend of red ales that were barrel aged for up to eight months before aging additionally on sour pie and Bing cherries for another eight months. Aromas of dark cherries, black currants and oak are noticed up front. Sharp, tart cherry notes, cinnamon and a hint of toasted almonds on the palate lead to bright sharp flavors of deep, rich fruit and a tart, dry finish. This would go well with a big meal or simply be enjoyed as a night cap. 7.5% ABV, $6 a glass.

Later this week, look for Honey Ginger Lime at the Barrel House, followed soon after at the Lodge. This NW style sour honey ginger lime ale was barrel aged for eight months before aging additionally on ginger and lime zest. Aromas of sweet ginger and lime are noticed up front. A cool, quenching lime note is followed by a slightly sweet ginger spice and heat that sparkles on the palate. A crisp bite of ginger and a lingering honey herbal note lead to a sweet lime and slight peppery finish. 7.5% ABV, $6 a glass.

Bottle Update: 2011 Apricot and 2011 Strawberry labels are being printed as we type, so we're getting closer! As soon as we have a release date, we will let you know.
