Benefit For Angelo: A Cause for A Worthy Friend

October 15, 2013
Benefit for Angelo De Ieso II Fundly Thursday, October 17th 5pm-10pm The Commons Brewery 1810 SE 10th Avenue Portland, OR Beer is an excellent perk, but I got into this business because of the (mostly) unassuming people and the knowledgeable PDX beer community. Raising a pint with friends—especially Portland beer lovers—is a special experience for me. Instant and lasting friendships can emerge in a brewery or taproom. My site has never turned a profit, and after almost 10 years,... Read More »

Initial Thoughts: 2013 Oregon Brewers Festival in Review

Rare site at OBF - no line for beer! The first Wednesday ever of the Oregon Brewers Fest is now in full swing and I was able to partake in a portion of it. These tidbits may help others navigate some of the next four days of debauchery (for my preview, check here): Wednesday is no secret: Although I timed my visit after the paraders had most likely cleared out and before the happy hour crowd... 2013 North American Organic Brewers Festival

Photo courtesy of NAOBF This is the second year in a row that I attended my favorite beer festival in Portland. The North American Organic Brewers Festival (NAOBF) is family oriented, small, environmentally conscience, and stocked with some damn fine beer. The NAOBF offered 60 organic beers and ciders from California, Minnesota, Montana, Oregon, Utah, and Washington along with sustainable practices that many other festivals (not just beer festivals) should adopt to lessen the impact... Gluten Is My Bitch & Omission

Author April Peveteaux reading from her new book Gluten Is My Bitch to a standing room only crowd at Widmer that included Fred Eckhardt I had the pleasure of being one of the three media members that turned out last Thursday evening to an exclusive roundtable interview with April Peveteaux, author of the new book Gluten Is My Bitch and the blog of the same name. Normally, a gluten-free event probably would not invite beer... Read More »

2013 Portland Fruit Beer Festival Recap

The Portland Fruit Beer Festival is interesting in the fact that it is not like any other festival in Portland. This festival is a chance for brewers to create some of the oddest one-off beers many people will ever try without the risk of losing money on a batch that doesn't sell. Because of this, brewers are able to stretch and bend their imaginations and push the limits of what a beer really can be.... Read More »

PDX Beer Braul Finals Tonight at Hawthorne Hophouse

Base Camp's In-Tents IPL was one of the easier beers to identify in the Braul While the rest of you were potentially loading up on cheap pints at Hopworks on the Tuesday of Portland Beer Week, I was enjoying the relative calm at the Fifteenth Avenue Hophouse for their PDX BEER BRÄUL at half price. The official write-up from the Hophouse can be found below, but I hope everyone was able hit either location (the original... Read More »

Portland Beer Week 2013

Portland Beer Week June 6-16 Events Calendar It's great to be a beer drinker in Portland. When the sun begins to drive the rain out, Portland starts throwing huge beer parties: hundreds of thousands come to our festivals, there are month long events, week long events, and sporadically sprinkled day parties throughout the spring and summer. Not to undervalue our amazing cold and wet weather events, but Portland really goes crazy (and goes outside) for... Read More »

Happy Hour Weekly Planner – SE Portland Edition

Here is the second installment in my Happy Hour Weekly Planner series. The first edition covered N/NE Portland and lined out the fairly rigorous criteria I laid out for establishments to meet. The basic requirement was $3 or less for 'good' beer and $2 or less for 'bad' beer. I tried to spread the love all around SE where beer drinking options abound, but my final list does tend to the areas I frequent more... Read More »

Near Beer: Events not to Miss in and Around Portland

There's a lot of beer being poured this weekend around Portland and the surrounding areas. Get it while you can, these are once-a-year events. In the case of John Harris's new brewery, get the details on this anticipated operation way, way, way before a single beer is poured. Widmer, Ya Did it Again!

In my last post (Beer: Don’t Describe it, Drink it.) I discussed how beer brings people together and helps build community. When drinking any one of the many craft beers available, one quickly learns there is more in a beer than just flavor. Widmer Brothers Brewing knows this too. I was invited to a private Widmer Brothers Brewing tasting held at BEER on Monday, April 15th. I was rather reluctant. Expecting a panel of judges,... Read More »

The Breakside Brewery Taproom Grand Opening

February 6, 2013
Taproom/Milwaukie Hours Mon-Fri: 3-7:30ish Sat: 12-6:30ish On Saturday, January 25th, five members of the Portlandbeer.org team gathered at Base Camp Brewing in SE Portland for a quarterly-ish meeting of the beer minds. Base Camp Brewing: Pre-Grand Opening

2012 Occidental Brewing Oktoberfest

Nestled way up by the St. John's Bridge, Occidental Brewing Company is quietly pumping out some great beers. Occidental's focus is on "continental" beers. Of course "continental" also includes Belgian styles, so keep an eye out for their Voorjaar Tripel. No matter the style, Occidental promotes the subtler malt and hop flavors... Read More »

The Stoic from Deschutes Brewery: An American Quad

Let's start this off by admitting that I know very little about the Belgian Quadrupel style.  I've had several versions, La Trappe Quadrupel, St. Bernardus Abt 12, Trappistes Rochefort 10, Allagash Grand Cru, and so forth. However, compared to the amount of Portland and Oregon based beer that I have to drink for this site, the numbers are very small. There are very few Quadrupel style ales brewed in the Portland and even fewer bottled.... Read More »

Ben also said to expect about 15 or 20 more offerings by the time the... Read More »
