PDX Beer Braul Finals Tonight at Hawthorne Hophouse
July 1, 2013
by Scott Schwab

Base Camp's In-Tents IPL was one of the easier beers to identify in the Braul While the rest of you were potentially loading up on cheap pints at Hopworks on the Tuesday of Portland Beer Week, I was enjoying the relative calm at the Fifteenth Avenue Hophouse for their PDX BEER BRÄUL at half price. The official write-up from the Hophouse can be found below, but I hope everyone was able hit either location (the original... Read More »
Fermented Photo: Pig War IPA from Hopworks Urban Brewery

This is a great IPA from Hopworks! I'm sipping the one pictured above as I type. Despite the IBUs at 80, the finish on this is not overly bitter, allowing the lush fruit flavors from the hops shine through. With wheat in the malt bill, the mouthfeel is silky. On tap this year, it was remarkable. This bottled version comes in a notch lower at fantastic—only because the hops are bit more muted in both the aroma and the... Read More »

Fresh Hops are NOT the New Bacon
September 28, 2012
by Scott Schwab

Fresh Hop French Press The Fresh Hops Workshop presented last Saturday night by Portland Beer Week at Saraveza's Bad Habit Room was an excellent opportunity to sample some outstanding fresh hop beers and to also experience fresh hops via other avenues. Like most craft beer drinkers in the Northwest, I love hoppy beers and look forward to fresh hop beers all year long. However, the workshop convinced me that, unlike bacon, hops do not make... For those that thought Portland Beer Week was a week-long celebration of all things beer in Portland held every June, you would only be partially correct. The actual 'week' was held this year over a baker's dozen week of 11 days from June 7th to the 17th. In addition, PDX Beer Week is morphing into the gift that keeps on giving the whole year (much like a Jelly of the Month Club) by adding events... Read More »

Aftermath: BiKETOBEERFEST Slams Another One Home

Plenty of bike parking available at the start of BIKETOBEERFEST The fourth annual BIKETOBEERFEST was held last Saturday at Hopworks Urban Brewery in SE Portland under bright sunshine and blue skies. Even though this was the intended result of moving the event up over a month, I know some people would have preferred a bit cooler temperatures to enjoy some of the heavier beers. Of the 13 beers on tap, two were barrel aged (Kentucky... Read More »
BiKETOBEERFEST Rolls Back to HUB

Although summer weather only recently arrived on a regular basis in Portland, Oktoberfest season officially kicks off this Saturday with Hopworks' BikeToBeerFest. I know Oktoberfest is a misnomer as it traditionally starts in September, but an early August start is pushing the limits of the 'season'. However, I won't hold it against them and plan on attending and partaking in the revelry. Here's what you definitely need to know: WHEN: Saturday, August 11 from 2:00... Read More »
Michigan Brewing Company Failure - Local Implications
July 25, 2012
by Scott Schwab

Michigan Brewing Company, from realdetroitweekly.com When I was back home visiting family over the Fourth of July, my brother broke the news to me that Michigan Brewing Company was no more. This news blew up bigger for me than any fireworks display (with the possible exception of San Diego this year - those 15 seconds were pretty unbelievable). Not only had Michigan lost its fourth largest brewery, but the Lansing area and the state lost... Read More »
Fermented Photo: The HUB Organic IPA, Canned

What better way to get ready for the Fourth of July than a test run of the grill. Of course, the grill worked fine last weekend, so this is just another excuse to grill more food. And what test run would be complete without beer? For today's test-fire, I chose a newly canned Hopworks Urban Brewery IPA. Dark golden color with citrus (orange, grapefruit, mild lemon) and pine hop flavors, slight sweetness from the malt,... Read More »
Big, Beautiful Holiday Releases from Hopworks

Happy Holidays to all of Portland from Hopworks Urban Brewery! Big releases this week including one of the standouts at this year's Holiday Ale Festival: Kentucky Christmas (on Thursday). Today from the brewery is a double header of their Noggin' Floggin' Barleywine. As of noon, you can stop in and do a side-by-side comparison of the vintage 2009 version against the 2010 bourbon barrel aged version. Tuesday's Imperial Stout sounds great as well, so you... A Traditionalists Review of BiKETOBEERFEST

Having been raised in a family with strong German roots, I have been to many Oktoberfest's. I love the taste of a good Bratwurst, weisswurst, potato pancakes and spatzel. I love the smell of the German food cooking, the sound of polka playing (only during Oktoberfest) and seeing people dressed in their lederhosen and dirndls laughing, dancing and having a good old Deutsch time. BiKETOBEERFEST isn't that. It's more like the strange second or third... Read More »

HUB's BiKETOBEERFEST: Portland's Little Secret

Summer in Portland, Oregon means a different beer fest every weekend. Usually these festivals are laden with lines that last thirty minutes, tents crowded with shirtless boys whooping every ten seconds and all of the unique beers disappearing on the first day. Keep in mind, I am not complaining. I enjoy any event centered around drinking new beer. I am merely putting my new love for the Hopworks' BiKETOBEERFEST into context. While I strolled through the... Bottle Release: Organic Rise Up Red from Hopworks

Well, you don't have to take my word, last year the GABF bestowed a Gold Medal in the American Style Amber/Red Ale on this beer. I haven't had this beer since it was out about a year ago and after trying again tonight, I'd have to agree with the GABF. This beer is an amazing representation of the style. Now, through a 22 ounce bottle, it'll be easier for you to get your hands on... Read More »

Beer of the Month - Hopworks Sasquatch Strong Ale [February 2009]
Hopworks Sasquatch Strong Ale [February 2009] Way to go Hopworks, three beers of the month in a row. How did you do it this time?
