Portland Beer Photos Hit 500,000 Views!

Don't forget: We've got a selection of free photos for you in our downloads selection. I just checked the stats and noticed this amazing number: 503,329! Photos in the Portlandbeer.org Flickr account have been viewed over 500,000 times! Inside my mind, I'm breakdancing like the guy in the photo above from this year's BiKETOBEERFEST. Outside my mind, everything is normal: just me sitting at a computer, eating baby carrot sticks, typing away and doing as... Read More »

Fermented Photo: PDX, Dogs, and Beer

PDX, Dogs, and Beer: Otto von Zitzewitz. Before anyone asks what this has to do with beer: I was drinking one while I took the photo. Portland goes together with dogs, just as it does with beer. All three can even go together with outdoor seating or even "dog-friendly" breweries like the Lucky Labrador. My dog Otto is absolutely nuts. He's either literally running in circles (kitchen, backyard, living room, etc.), jumping in... Read More »
Fermented Photo: Old Humbug Winter Warmer

Southern Oregon Brewing's Old Humbug Winter Warmer. You can probably guess from the Brewery's name that they don't reside in Portland. However, now that they are bottling, it's much easier to get your grubby hands on their beers here in PDX. Sure, Scrooge and humbugging are related to the Winter season, but "old" this and "old" that are traditionally reserved for Barleywine style ales. Oh well, with a beer this good, I won't hold it... Fermented Photo: Deschutes Red Chair NWPA

Deschutes Red Chair NWPA. Spring Seasonal (6-packs, 12-packs and draft) From the brewery: "Not up for a full–on hop assault? Red Chair NWPA is a smoother ride. Seven select European and domestic malts take a surprisingly plush, satin turn on the way to a citrusy hop kick. Edges out, layers in. Witness the subtle, aromatic seduction of the debut Northwest Pale Ale. Red Chair NWPA is named for the oldest operating chairlift at Mt. Bachelor:... Read More »
Fermented Photo: Bell's Expedition Stout

Bell's Expedition Stout. Nope not a Portland beer. Not even a West Coast beer. But that's the point of the holidays: give, give, give. I give out a lot of beer realted presents for the holidays, and sometimes I get some in return. This year, portlandbeer.org contributor Ian gifted me my first Bell's beer: Expedition Stout. Hopefully, the first of many (hint, hint). It wouldn't be the holidays without some grovelling, right! Read More »
Fermented Photo: Laurelwood's Auld Battle Axe

Laurelwood's Auld Battle Axe. This year, for their limited addition 1 Liter swing-top release, Laurelwood brings us a Scotch-style ale. This is a style that's not seen too often around Portland. Big on malt, high in alcohol, and very low on bitterness, this falls way outside of the comfort zone of many a PDX hop head. But during these last few bitter cold days, this beer really hits the spot--warming you up from the inside... Read More »

Fermented Photo: 2009 Full Sail Wreck the Halls

2009 Full Sail Wreck the Halls. While other beers go malty, this winter beer leans toward hoppy. In fact, it's labeled as a "hoppy holiday ale". The only thing wrong with this beer is that I only bought one. Delicious! Read More »

Bailey's Taproom. Finally, a much needed night out after work, work, work. We ended up at Bailey's Taproom for a few beers on a typical rainy and dark Wednesday in Portland. Fermented Photo: 2009 Oregon Brewers Festival

Fermented Photo: Baltic and Imperial Porter Tasting

Baltic and Imperial Porter tasting at Upright Brewing. A shot from the Porter tasting at Upright Brewing a couple of weeks back. The strong beers hit quickly, but I still can't help but wonder what these people think as I crawl on tables and in between barrels with a camera in one hand and a glass of 11% Porter in the other. They'd probably be more horrified if I dropped my beer, whereas I might... Read More »

Fermented Photo: Oregon Trail Bourbon Barrel Porter

Oregon Trail Bourbon Barrel Porter. This one comes from Oregon Trail Brewery in Corvallis Oregon. Not much to say, yet--it's still in my fridge. Fermented Photo: My Dad, the Dissident

My dad, the dissident. This scene is from our family's first annual Cellar Series. I've been stocking up on beer for next year's series, so I took a look through last year's photos and found this one. The Fermented Photo post usually comes out on Fridays, but I wanted to wait until today to post this special Father's Day edition. While my brothers and I were stuck in college in South Carolina, my dad made his... Widmer Brothers 25th Anniversary Double Alt. I know. Same beer from a couple of weeks ago. But, there's a twist. I got a package in the mail this week from Widmer Brothers Brewing. Fermented Photo: Moose and Squirrel Russian Imperial Stout

Laurelwood's Moose and Squirrel Russian Imperial Stout. I wasn't able to hold onto these bottles as long as I had hoped. They "disappeared" rather quickly. If you see it, drink it! Good Times, Bad Times: A Fitting End to a Trusted Friend

Canon 50mm Lens: Maimed In Action. Well, it had to happen sometime. Today I say somewhat of a goodbye to a trusty companion who was maimed in the field this past weekend. A few days ago, my beloved Canon 50mm f1.4 lens took a dive off of a bench and was irreparably injured. Now to say that he was my most popular or most beautiful friend would be a lie and an insult to his... Read More »

Fresh Nugget Hops

Fresh Nugget hops. Laurelwood brewer Paul Bergeman drove into Portland this morning with a truck full of fresh hops. Pins, plates, and broken bones

Pins, plates, and broken bones As most of you know, almost one year ago, I was in a motorcycle accident. Not my fault, but that didn't seem to matter to my leg--which kept me couch and bed ridden for 2 straight months. My tibia was split down the middle--kind of like you would chop a piece of firewood--and it required surgery, plates and pins. As seen below, I also got a cool 9" of surgical... Read More »
